–Walt Whitman
Start your holiday celebrations with this poem from The Walt Whitman Archives, written to be sung in Fort Greene on July 4, 1846, to the tune of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
This weekend’s weather should cooperate with your Fourth of July festivities, though a storm may interrupt the fun on Sunday.
But before you fire up the barbecue, take a peek into the neighborhood’s history. If it doesn’t rain, Sunday brings a chance to explore colonial life with the Urban Park Rangers in Fort Greene Park, at 1 p.m. at the Visitor Center. The free tour promises a glimpse into the city’s history of “Ice-age glaciers, Native Americans, Dutch traders, British Redcoats, and the Underground Railroad.”
If you’re looking for a little out-of-town type fun without going out of town,go kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park on July 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All gear is provided and it’s also free.
In neighborhood news, the Brooklyn Academy of Music has teamed up with Forest City Ratner Companies, the developer of the Barclays Center, and will select artists to perform at the arena, the New York Times reported. There will be three or four performances a year that would have been too large for BAM’s regular spaces. Michael Galinsky, a Local contributor anddocumentary filmmaker, expresses some skepticism about the alliance in the article: “This is a much greater benefit to Ratner from this P.R. perspective than it is to BAM,” he tells The Times.
Enjoy your holiday weekend, locals!
