Singer Amy Winehouse found dead

Amy Winehouse was known for two things; her powerful contralto vocals and her history with drug abuse. She spent most of her career trying to get out of going to rehab, and even famously sang about it in her hit song “Rehab”.

The last couple of years her battle with substance abuse made more headlines than her singing career. In 2005 she went through a period of heavy drinking, heavy drug use and violent mood swings. By October 2006 she gained international fame for her critically acclaimed album 'Back to Black', entering the Billboard charts at number seven and was named the best selling album in the UK in 2007.

By 2008 she won Grammy awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance while her album 'Back to Black' was nominated for Album of the Year and won the Best Pop Vocal Album award...

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment this morning. She was only 27 years old. She’s struggled with drugs and alcohol for several years, and had multiple unsuccessful stints in rehab.

Amy hit it big with her single ‘Rehab’, a song about not wanted to seek treatment over an addiction. Seems like art was imitating life. Amy’s public struggle with drugs overshadowed her successful short-lived career. But she’s not the only artist who tragically lost her life at 27. Let’s take a look at the 27 club. Kurt Cobain: The Nirvana frontman committed suicide at 27 years old after his band hit it big. The ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ singer started the Seattle grunge era in the 90’s but often complained about the pressures of fame. He had a tumultuous relationship with fame, his wife Courtney Love and heroin addiction. He committed suicide on April 5, 1994 at the age of 27.
