The trial for Casey Anthony is coming to a close and The Orlando Sentinel is livestreaming its remainder and the closing arguments.
The trial follows the death of Caylee Anthony, the 2-year-old daughter of Casey Anthony who went missing in July 2008. Her remains were discovered in December 2008.
Caylee’s mother, Casey Anthony faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, aggravated child abuse and providing false information to law enforcement. If convicted, she could be sentenced to death.
The trial began May 9. Since it started, the defense attorney for Casey Anthony claimed that 2-year-old Caylee Anthony drowned in the family swimming pool and was not murdered by her mother.
In his opening statement, Defense Attorney, Jose Baez said that Caylee had been swimming with her grandmother Cindy Anthony on June 15, 2008. He suggested that Cindy forgot to pull up the safety ladder and the little girl slipped into the pool when no one was looking.
Baez said that Casey didn’t call the police because she panicked. He also alleged that she was abused by her father as a child and by her brother, who was given a paternity test to see if he was Caylee’s father. These factors also played a role in the cover up of her daughter’s drowning, he stated.
According to ABC, Casey Anthony’s defense is that she didn’t tell anyone for over a month that Caylee was missing and insisted for months that Caylee was stolen and that she made up those stories because she was “trained to lie” through years of sexual abuse by her father and brother.
The prosecution claims that Casey Anthony killed Caylee with chloroform and then duct taped over her nose and mouth.
