hollywoodnews.com: As far as we’re concerned, the Oscar season begins at the Hollywood Awards Gala.
We take pride in recognizing several talents on an annual basis who will compete at the Academy Awards, and this year is no different. Our honorees at the 15th Annual Hollywood Film Awards have remained in the awards conversation over the past few months, and find themselves at or near the front of the Oscar race as we head into the final stretch before nominees are announced on Jan. 25, 2012.
As we work our way through the final week of 2011, we want to go back and revisit our honorees, and point out where they stand in the Oscar season. We are very proud of the creative talents we have recognized, and couldn’t be more thrilled to see them competing for Oscars in various categories.
GEORGE CLOONEY – 2011 Hollywood Actor Award
George Clooney continues to have a very busy awards season, juggling two films with Oscar potential.
Clooney is receiving the bulk of his attention for his portrayal of real estate baron Matt King in Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants.” King is a man with several emotional problems that need to be addressed before he says goodbye to a beloved family member. Clooney received some of the best reviews of his career for “Descendants,” which featured the leading man at his most vulnerable. The fact that Payne surrounded Clooney with a powerful ensemble – led by Hollywood Film Awards honoree Shailene Woodley – only helped the actor’s performance.
And while “Descendants” has been grabbing the most headlines throughout the Oscar season, Clooney’s directorial effort, “The Ides of March,” received a much-needed shot in the arm from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association last week when they gave the political thriller four Golden Globe nominations includingBest Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director.
We expect Clooney to compete at this year’s Oscars for “The Descendants,” and Academy support for “Ides of March” certainly remains possible. Years ago, this beloved actor-director showed up at the Academy Awards in support of two films, “Good Night and Good Luck” and “Syriana.” He won his first Oscar for the latter.
Could a similar situation happen again this year? It’s possible. But Clooney’s awards season started in earnest in October when he stood on stage at the Beverly Hilton at the Hollywood Film Awards and had this to say to those in attendance:
