Vladimir Putin will be one step closer to becoming the next Russian president, marking his second coming at the Kremlin. His party, United Russia, will nominate him as their main man on Sunday, local press reported.
United Russia is the ruling party. Current president Dmitry Medvedev will take over as party president and will likely be nominated as Putin’s Prime Minister, a role Putin has now. The tandem, as Medvedev and Putin are known, are expected to change roles next year. Putin is basically a shoo-in. The opposition party barely has a voice in the mainstream press.
Other political parties, including the Communist party and the anti-immigrant Liberal Democratic party (go figure), are expected to announce their candidates after the upcoming parliamentary elections. They don’t stand a chance. Their popularity rating is below 15%, according to the Public Opinion Foundation in Moscow. The presidential campaign season officially started in Russia on Saturday. Russia’s election day is March 4, 2012.
