John Rhode, a 41-year-old special education teacher from Arizona, was crowned “The Biggest Loser” on NBC Tuesday night.
Rhode lost 220 pounds during the weight-loss reality competition series and won $250,000 for his efforts.
“I feel fantastic, I feel like I can do anything,” Rhode told talk-show host Wendy Williams Wednesday. “The weight was only part of the journey.”
Rhode began the competition weighing 445 pounds. He weighed in on the finale at 225. In short, he lost 49.44% of his starting body weight during the production.
Viewers of the popular show saw the “business John,” he said Wednesday.
The man on with Wendy Williams was “party John.”
The runner up was Antone Davis, a 44-year-old restaurant manager and former NFL player from Tennessee who lost 202 pounds. Coming in third of the finalists was Ramon Medeiros, a 27-year-old tattoo artist from Colorado, who lost 154 pounds.
Rhode admitted his wife had to bear the burden of his role on the show as a single mom, with their youngest child being autistic.
He gained the weight, he said, by eating junk.
“I would secret eat, I would late-night eat, I would eat until it hurt,” Rhode told Williams. “I bought, on any given day, I would buy 10 bucks worth of candy at the local store.”
He also loaded up on cheap hamburgers, he said,
“Look at what quick and easy does to you,” he said.
During the competition, trainer Bob Harper said he was concerned Rhode would gain all the weight back.
Rhode wouldn’t address Harper’s comments directly — saying he wasn’t completely sure of the context — but admitted it’s a concern.
“I’m scared to death that I’m going to put the weight back,” he said. “It’s a daily struggle. I love carbs, why lie?”
Williams said he looked good, and wondered whether he’d already had surgery to remove the excess skin left over from losing 220lbs.
He said he hadn’t, and that the extra folds were carefully placed right now.
“I’m going to probably need some skin surgery,” he said, adding he’d wait a year. “It’s part of the journey; nothing’s over.”
