Zanesville, Ohio 911 calls: ‘Just heard a lion roar in the woods’

Zanesville, Ohio 911 calls: ‘Just heard a lion roar in the woods’

A series of frantic phone calls started to come in to the Zanesville, Ohio Police Department just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A sign warning motorists that exotic animals are on the loose rests on I-70 Wednesday, near Zanesville, Ohio. (Tony Dejak/AP)
“Bears, lions, and wolves running loose.... may be coming into city,” the service report of the first call read. “Seen a large brown animal walking... knows it was not a dog or cat,” went another call.
The calls got increasingly more frightening, as Zanesville residents reported seeing exotic beasts in their backyards, cemetary, and school. One caller saw two men dressed in camouflage driving with a bear carcass in the bed of their truck.
The animals that residents reported were among more than 50 exotic beasts that escaped from a wild-animal park Tuesday after the owner threw their cages open and committed suicide. The escapees included cougars, lions, camels, tigers, and grizzly bears.
