BET Awards 2014: 1 shot dead, 1 stabbed at 'unaffiliated' awards parties

A fatal shooting and a separate stabbing at unsanctioned parties celebrating Sunday's BET Awards cast a shadow over the event, where top superstars like Lil Wayne, Chris Rock and others were set to mark the best in black entertainment.

meekmillpromo.jpgRapper Meek Mill hosted a BET Awards pre-party Saturday night that was interrupted by a fight that left a man stabbed, according to website hotnewhiphop.com.

One person was killed and five injured in two separate incidents ahead of the show at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, Los Angeles police said. The events were "unauthorized and unaffiliated with the BET Awards," BET said in a statement.

"The network and all organizers will continue to maintain a safe environment for all planned activities," the statement said.

The death and four of the injuries followed gunfire early Sunday at a restaurant, Officer Drake Madison said. Separately, a man was stabbed in the stomach Saturday night at a nightclub. Rapper Meek Mill hosted the party where a fight led to the stabbing, according to website hotnewhiphop.com.

The violence could change the mood at the ceremony. This year, some of the performers include Pharrell, John Legend and Nicki Minaj.

Top nominees are Drake, Beyonce and Jay Z, who have five each.

Drake, who was originally set to perform at the show, will not attend, BET said Sunday. A representative for Beyonce also said the singer wouldn't attend, and her husband's rep wouldn't divulge if Jay Z would be there or not. Their attendance had nothing to do with the violence at the weekend parties.

Drake didn't attend last year's show, where he won video of the year. This year, the 27-year-old rapper's "Worst Behavior" is nominated for the top prize, competing with Beyonce's "Drunk in Love" and "Partition," as well as Pharrell's "Happy" and Chris Brown's "Fine China."

Beyonce and Jay Z launched a co-headlining stadium tour days ago. She is nominated for best female R&B/pop artist, with little competition aside from Rihanna, while her husband will battle Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Future for best male hip-hop artist.

Pharrell scored four nominations, including best male R&B/pop artist, best collaboration for Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and the viewer's choice award. Beyonce, Drake and rising newcomers August Alsina and Jhene Aiko are also up for the fan-voted award.

Thicke, who is set to release his new album, "Paula" -- an ode to his wife, Paula Patton, whom he is separated from -- on Tuesday, will perform Sunday. Usher, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Blige and Iggy Azalea will also take the stage.

Minaj and Azalea -- whose anthemic "Fancy" has spent its fifth week on top of the Billboard charts -- will compete for best female hip-hop artist, an award Minaj has won consecutively for four years.

Lionel Richie will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the show, to be hosted by Chris Rock. Kerry Washington, Kevin Hart and Gabrielle Union are among this year's presenters.

The BET Awards will air live at 8 p.m. EDT.

Costa Rica vs Greece Preview and Predicted Lineups

World Cup 2014

Updated today at 9:00 AM

Greece and Costa Rica have a combined total of just seven victories in the history of the World Cup, with the Central American side qualifying for the first time in 1990 and the Europeans in 1994. Not many expected either one of them to reach the quarter finals but after today’s match in the Arena Pernambuco, Recife, that’s exactly what the outcome will be… a greatly unfancied side will be considered one of the best eight teams in world soccer.
Now the question is who will succeed? The defensive resilience and team spirit of Greece? Or the creativity and hard work of the Costa Ricans?

In midfield, Katsouranis may return in place of skipper Giorgios Karagounis after serving a one-match suspension. Andreas Samaris, a goalscorer against the Ivory Coast, may start ahead of an injured Kone whilst a front three of Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, Giorgios Samaras and Dimitrios Salpingidis may very well feature as Theofanis Gekas has failed to impress in previous matches and Konstantinos Mitroglou’s injury frustrations continue.

Costa Rica will most likely be set up with a back three in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Bryan Ruiz and F.C. Copenhagen’s Christian Bolanos roaming behind lone striker Joel Campbell who has truly impressed in Brazil this summer. The same line up used against Italy is expected with Junior Diaz and Christian Gamboa providing the width and the hard-working central midfield pairing of Yeltsin Tejeda and Celso Borges. Levante’s Keylor Navas, a revelation in Spain’s La Liga recently, will win his 57th cap.

Predicted Score
Greece’s defensive resolve coupled by their team spirit may, in my opinion, prove to be just enough to help them get past Costa Rica who are being viewed as favorites.
Greece 1 – 0 Costa Rica

The Cooling Mist Fan with Humidifier SF-1515W

SPT 12'' Misting Fan with Humidifier SF-1515W

Stay cool this summer the same way ritzy outdoor cafes in Palm Springs do – with the heat fighting power of evaporative cooling mist. With a large 48 oz. water tank that will dispense cooling mist for up to 9 hours and your choice of 3 wind modes and 3 speeds, the Cooling Mist Fan will lower the temperature of any room (and your air conditioning bills). Rotating louvers provide increased air circulation, and remote allows you to control wind speed and humidity output without leaving your seat.

During the winter months, we can add layers, start up a fire, turn on the heat, or a variety of other options when we’re cold. When it’s hot out, there are only so many layers you can take off. All we can hope for is the air conditioning to work, and lots of cold water.

Of course, if you have a fair deal of disposable income, then you might be able to purchase something like the Cooling Mist Fan. This has a 48 ounce tank that can dispense cool water into the air for up to 9 hours. It will lower the temperature of any room, and can help humidify a room if you’re dealing with hot heat rather than humid heat. There are 3 wind modes and 3 speeds to choose from, so you don’t only have options of high and low.

There is a remote, so you can control the functions of this mister from the comfort of your seat. If it’s not as hot outside, you can use just the humidifier or fan separately. There is a window so you can see the water levels so you’ll know when you need to refill, and an internal motor overheat protector so it can’t crap out on you when you need it. The main unit plugs into a standard AC outlet, and the remote will need two AAA batteries to function. This will cost you around $190, but may pay for itself if it helps lower your air conditioning bills (though it would drive up your electric and water consumption…so nevermind).

Shooting at Seattle Pacific University (Video)

3 shot at Seattle Pacific University before student tackles gunman

(CNN) -- When Briana Clarke heard popping sounds on a Seattle college campus on Thursday, she thought the source must be something innocent -- bursting balloons. Then she saw a classmate running frantically, saying someone had been shot.

A gunman had opened fire at Seattle Pacific University, killing one person and wounding two more before he was tackled by a student security guard, Seattle police said.

The gunman was reloading a shotgun when the tackler, working as a building monitor, used pepper spray and knocked him down, Police Capt. Chris Fowler told reporters.

"Once on the ground, other students jumped on top of them and subdued the shooter," he said.
The suspect, 26-year-old Aaron Ybarra, is not a student at the school, police said.

They believe he acted alone, but the investigation is going on. Police did not disclose a motive.

Would have been worse
Clarke saw students covered in blood.

"When I walked outside and saw someone down, that was disturbing seeing a bunch of bullets around," she said. "Seeing my friend outside being treated, that's was hard to swallow."

The thought that she could have been a victim went through her head.

Police are convinced the shooter would have harmed more people, had those around him not intervened.

"This story is not about an evil act but about the people that actually lived through this scenario and assisted each other when things were pretty tragic." said Seattle police Asst. Chief Paul McDonagh.
The suspect was armed with a shotgun, a knife and additional rounds of ammunition, he said.

Pellet wounds
The shooting began inside the foyer of Otto Miller Hall, which houses the university's science, math and engineering departments, when the gunman confronted three people and shot them, Fowler said.
A 19-year-old man was declared dead at Harborview Medical Center. A 20-year-old woman was in critical condition and a 24-year-old man was in satisfactory condition, she said.

He suffered pellet wounds to the neck and chest, a police statement said. A fourth person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Officials immediately locked down the campus.

Blood on floor and walls
University President Daniel J. Martin told CNN affiliate KCPQ he turned on a monitor to view security camera images from Otto Miller Hall after he was alerted to the shooting.

"The students acted without regard for their own safety," he said, his voice breaking with emotion.
Jillian Smith was taking a math test when she learned the campus was on lockdown. She said she kept taking the test until she heard police officers yelling.

"After we found out by social media what was going on, people were crying and everything," Smith told CNN affiliate KOMO.

Police escorted students out of the building, where she she saw blood on the floor and walls in the foyer.

Blake Oliveria was in a class when he heard the gunshots.

He said he removed his shoes in case he had to run but stayed in the classroom until police arrived to escort students out.

"I saw blood ... on the ground," he told CNN. "There were two or three big (pools) and some small ones scattered throughout the hallway."

Questions
Mary Jones' daughter attends Seattle Pacific but was unharmed. Still, she wonders how safe colleges will be without laws regulating access to guns.

"Where are the controls to keep our children from purchasing a handgun or any other kind of weapon? And does that take government controls to keep that from happening? I don't know," she told KOMO. "There has to be a greater understanding of what that weapon can do and the pain it can inflict on another person's life."

Seattle Pacific is a Christian university with a student population of 4,270. It is located in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood. The school has canceled classes all day Friday, it said on its website.
