Queen – Greatest Hits – 1991

Queen was a rock band formed in 1970 in London by guitarist Brian May, the singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor, with bassist John Deacon completing the lineup the following year.

The band noted for their musical diversity, multi-layered arrangements, vocal harmonies and incorporation of audience participation during their live performances. They are considered pioneers in the development of hard rock and heavy metal, incorporating elements of glam rock, progressive rock, folk, blues, pop and even reggae. His performance at the Live Aid concert in 1985 was chosen through a survey as the best musical rock performance of all time.

Queen enjoyed success in Britain in the early '70s with the albums Queen and Queen II, but it was with the release of Sheer Heart Attack in 1974 and A Night At The Opera the following year that the band reached international success. Released 15 studio albums, five live albums and numerous compilations. Since Mercury's death and Deacon's retirement, May and Taylor have been presented together occasionally at special events and TV shows as guest musicians and other artists and / or bands. From 2004 to 2009 worked with Paul Rodgers under the name Queen + Paul Rodgers. Queen has sold approximately 300 million copies worldwide.

Queen was named the thirteenth best hard rock artist in a list compiled by VH1 (VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock list).

Greatest Hits II

A month before Freddie's death, on 28 October 1991, EMI had released the second biggest hits compilation, Greatest Hits II, which included 17 of the biggest hits of the band between 1981 and 1991. This album debuted at number one on the charts selling UK. Interestingly started down positions: in the second week dropped to number 2 (at the top was Enya), the following No. 3 (in the week of Genesis We Can not Dance was ranked first), but the most curious , in the fourth week the album fell to sixth place (in that week Dangerous Michael Jackson made a triumphant entry at number one). Obviously, now in its fifth week, the album returned to the top (this time with higher sales) and remained in that position for another 4 weeks. In total, the album was five weeks at the top, and with only 8 weeks on the charts, was the third best selling album of 1991, after receiving the quadruple platinum by 1,200,000.

However successful Greatest Hits II was even higher in other European countries. In Holland, the album went to number one in the last two weeks of 1991, and remained in that position until early March 1992 (a total of 11 consecutive weeks). In May of that year, the album went to the top, this time two weeks to complete the term of 13 at the top. The album was certified platinum in May 1997 (500,000 copies). In this country, The Miracle and Innuendo had reached number one, remaining 3 and 4 weeks respectively in that position.

Other Highlights: The disc reached number one in Switzerland (11 weeks), Austria (3 weeks), Finland, Italy (12 weeks), Spain (8 weeks), France (4 weeks) and Portugal. It also reached number two in Germany and Sweden. Queen also was the best-selling band between 1991 and 1992 in the UK, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Portugal and France, among others.
