People’s Choice Awards 2012: Katy Perry, ‘Harry Potter’ dominate the meaningless trophies

If the People’s Choice Awards are any indication, then Katy Perry and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” may be the population’s most beloved pop cultural creations of 2011.
The “Fireworks” singer — who, in the wake of her split from Russell Brand, opted not to attend the ceremony, held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live and broadcast on CBS — snagged six trophies, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Tour Headliner, Favorite Song of the Year (for “E.T.”) and Favorite TV Guest Star for her cameo on “How I Met Your Mother.”
The final chapter in the “Harry Potter” saga also managed to galvanize enough online votes to land four awards, including Favorite Movie, Action Movie, Ensemble Movie Cast and Book Adaptation. Weirdly, though, Chloe Grace Moretz, star of “Hugo,” managed to beat out practically the entire cast of “Deathly Hallows Part 2” in the Favorite Actor Under 25 category. Maybe Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton split the vote?
A total of 41 People’s Choice Award winners were announced, more than we can possibly cover in a single post. So here’s the most relevant info, assuming that anything about the People’s Choice Awards actually qualifies as relevant.

• Somehow “Water for Elephants” managed to snag Favorite Drama Movie over more critically acclaimed fare such as “Moneyball” and “The Help.” But that makes sense. Robert Pattinson is in “Water for Elephant” and with no “Twilight” movie to rally around, this was the only logical voting focus for members of Team Edward. (For the record, “Bridesmaids” won Favorite Comedy Movie, which tells us something really important what might happen at the Oscars ... oh, wait a second. No it doesn’t.)
• There were a few two-time winners: Johnny Depp (Favorite Movie Actor and Animated Movie Voice), Emma Stone (Favorite Movie Actress and Comedic Movie Actress) and “Supernatural” (Favorite Network TV Drama and Sci-Fi Fantasy Show).
• Kim Kardashian was named Favorite TV Celebreality Star. Gene Simmons and Kathy Griffin, who both lost in this category, have got to to be ticked.
• The People’s Choice Awards is broadcast on CBS. And coincidentally, a pair of CBS shows won the Favorite New TV Drama and New TV Comedy categories: “Person of Interest” and “2 Broke Girls,” respectively.
• Nathan Fillion made perhaps the best acceptance speech of the evening when he claimed his Favorite TV Drama Actor award by looking at his Waterford crystal statuette and addressing his fans: “Let this giant crystallized tear of victory symbolize your excellent taste.”
• And that leaves just 21 more awards to cover. Want to know who won those? Read the full list of what the people chose.
