Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll pop? Not for the squeaky-clean and staying that way Justin Bieber.
It should come as no surprise to Beliebers that 2012 is primed to be the year the singer becomes a man (or at least turns 18), and while for some artists, that means an aggressive push of proving both a more adult sound and more adult behavior, Justin's more impressionable young fans (and their parents) don't have to worry about that.
"Here's the thing: I think that I don't need to try to do anything," the V cover boy told the magazine in this month's issue. "There are people who try to grow up too fast—they're 18, so they're like, I'm not a kid anymore. People need to know I'm not a kid anymore. But at the end of the day, I'm not completely grown-up. I'm still learning.
"I'm not going to try to conform to what people want me to be or go out there and start partying, have people see me with alcohol."
And while he'll evolve naturally as an artist, there are certain areas that he says will always be no-gos for him.
"I don't want to start singing about things like sex, drugs and swearing," he told the mag. "I'm into love, and maybe I'll get more into making love when I'm older. But I want to be someone who is respected by everybody."
Just when we thought he couldn't be any more of a parents' dream.
In terms of singing clean, it may seem unlikely then that his music of choice is often of the parental advisory variety—Lil Wayne and Kanye [West] are among the artists he lists as favorites—but he makes it clear that while he enjoys them, he's not out to mimic them...though there is someone he wouldn't mind being compared to.
"I can't say I look up to them, but I definitely like what they do. I think that they're amazing," he said. "But are they on Michael [Jackson]'s level? I don't think they're on Michael's level."
So, what can we expect from this clean-singing, sex-avoiding pop phenom in the future?
"My goal at the end of the day—right now—I want to be successful and be great at what I do. But eventually, I want to become the best at what I do. I want to be the best. In the world. I want to be better than anybody that's ever done it…Because for me, I work so hard and this consumes my life, and it's not worth it if I'm not the best."
